Hello

There are several ways to greet people:

"السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته" or just "السلام عليكم" is the formal greeting in Arabic. It literally means "Peace be upon you".
You can use this with everyone: strangers, friends or family members.
When someone greet you with "السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته" you -or the people to whom the greeting is addressed to- must reply back with "وعليكم السلام ورحمة الله وربكاته" or just "وعليكم السلام". It's considered very rude not to reply back.
